EdView's Internet Safety Kit
| Description |
|
EdView,
Inc was a Minneapolis based internet safety software
development and marketing organization. Their product, Channel Lock
allowed parents and educators to restrict web site browsing and other
internet services to only educator approved and reviewed internet
content. Their first product was based for the Macintosh
platform. The EdView solution differed from other blocking and
filtering software in that it uses an inclusive or white list
approach to internet safety rather than relying on the failure prone
black list and keyword filtering used by products like CyberPatrol.
The Internet Safety
Kit was available through national retailers like Best Buy, Office
Max, The Apple Store and CompUSA.

Note: Unfortunately,
EdView is no longer in business. We receive several
calls a week for assistance on removing the software from
systems on which it was preinstalled (usually the Macintosh
version). Unfortunately removal requires the original
CD-Rom for the software which is no longer available.
We wish we had better news for those affected, you may want
to contact Apple, Inc. as they purchased the assets of
EdView, Inc. |

| Project |
| The project consisted of
replicating the existing Macintosh product on the Windows 95 and
Windows NT 4.0 platforms. The software needed to intercept all
web browsers (Netscape, IE, Opera, etc.) as well as other TCP/IP
based applications such as E-Mail, FTP and Telnet.
The software, when installed
registers itself with the operating system and "injects" itself into
all TCP/IP applications. Once injected the Channel Lock code
watches for TCP/IP requests from each application and validates
URL's, ports and IP/Addresses against a central directory
and against user defined approved sites and services.
Parents and teachers can customize the browsing experience by adding
their own sites to the white list of approved
sites. Future versions of the product will add
greater customizability and workgroup support
